Independence Day: President, prime minister pay homage:
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid homage to the matrys by placing floral wreaths at the alter of the National Mausoleum at around 5:45am on Thursday observing Independence Day. Armed forces personnel provided Guard of Honour. Cabinet members, Justices, top brass of the armed forces and key government officials were also present on the occasion.
Next freedom fighters, diplomats, dignitaries from various organisations paid tribute. 26 March marks the beginning of the struggle against the then Pakistani regime.
On the night of Mar 25, 1971 "Operation Searchlight" was launched by Pakistani army to crush the Bangalee people. Father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman that night declared Independece before he was detained by the Pakistani junta. Hence began the nine-month Liberation War for Independent Bangladesh.
